I would like to study the use of daycare/preschool among second-generation migrants in a panel setting. I simply want to generate a dummy for each children whether or not he/she attended preschool/daycare. however, i have difficulty in identifying which variable it is, because there are many variables related to childcare in kidlong and bioagel (and i’m not sure if i have covered all the available datasets related to childcare), not to mention that it’s mostly not available (question not asked/not included/does not apply). I would really appreciate if you can point me to the right direction.

The variables in KIDLONG are based on responses to questions in the household questionnaire, which is completed by one member of the household (usually the head of the household ).
KIDLONG is a pooled dataset identified by the variables pid (Never Changing Person ID Child) and syear (Survey Year).
A value of -1 (“No answer / don’t know”) indicates that respondents saw the question but did not provide an answer. A value of -2 (“Does not apply”) means that the respondent was filtered out and therefore did not see the question. Accordingly, I would not recommend equating -2 with “does not attend any institution.” You could validate your assumption that the child does not attend such institutions due to their age by incorporating the year of birth (gebjahr) from PPFAD.

The German label (“keine dieser Einrichtungen” – “none of these institutions”) is correct, and the English label should be adjusted a ccor dingly.
