Difference between lm0404_v1 and lm0404_v2

Dear SOEP Team,

I have a question about the different versions of this variable. In the dataset, V1 and V2 seem to refer to the same years, but I am not sure what the difference between them is. I also noticed that V1 does not appear in the documentation.

Could you please explain what the difference between V1 and V2 is and why V2 is used instead of V1?

Hi ayisha,

from 2015 to 2018, the question distinguished between up to two official school languages, since in some countries more than one official national language is taught at school. The variable lm0404_v1 contains the grade for the first official school language, while lm0404_v2 contains the grade for the second official school language. Foreign languages were asked about separately. These questions were asked in samples M1–M5.

In 2019, the question was changed. From then on, only one grade for the official school language was collected, so the distinction between a first and second official school language was no longer made (lm0404_v2 ).
