I have a question regarding the variable on monthly electricity costs “bmh_34_01” (SOEP 2022) and heating “bmh_32_01” (SOEP 2022) as I find that about half of the households did not respond because “do not know [-1]” or “do not apply [-2]”. Is the high number of observations with those characteristics something particular to that year 2022? or could it be that this question was only answered by households that own the house?
In reading Survey Instruments 1415 “SOEP-Core - 2022: Household (PAPI, with Reference to Variables)” I cannot find a detail on whether these questions are to be answered by all households or an explanation for the high number of unanswered questions, so I would appreciate your help.
Exactly, tenants and owners always have their own block of questions on housing costs in the SOEP household instrument. I recommend you take a look at our PDF templates with reference to variables. Above each question, you will find a note indicating whether the question is only asked in filtered form and, if so, exactly what the filter looks like.
